About the Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG):
Every year in October the CWG auction is being held at Spiers/Stellenbosch. All winemakers of the Guild are allowed to present one or two specific wines made only for this event showing great quality basically to market the wine making capabilities of the estate and South Africa in general. That auction is well positioned in the wine industry and every year wine lovers and collectors from all over the world join the event to bid for the finest South African wines. All these wines are being sold in smaller quantities. Most wines stay in South Africa and they are nearly impossible to find in Europe. Except for the wines we are buying at CWG.
The Shiraz component was selected from our best vineyard (block 27) and forms the backbone of this blend. This varietal is responsible for the dark fruit aromas, body and structure of the wine. The Grenache (block 26), made from a bush-vine vineyard imparts elegant violet notes and cherry flavours to the wine, while the Mourvèdre (block 13), planted in shale soil, brings subtle spice, mulberry notes and a rustic feel to palate.
The Viognier (block 25) and Roussanne (block 41) are made separately as a white wine and used sparingly as blending components. The Viognier gives a sophistication and full-bodied mouthfeel to the palate, whereas Roussanne adds structure. Both white cultivars softens the red components' tannin structures and imparts subtle yellow stone-fruit and flower aromas, which contribute to the complexity of the blend.
