Saxenburg Wine Estate

Where passion turns to wine

Saxenburg Wine Farm

Saxenburg Wine Farm

The history of Saxenburg dates back to 1693. At that time Governor Simon Van Der Stel granted the land to Joachim Sax, a man from Sweden. In 1705 the farm was bought by Oloff and Albertus Bergh, also from Sweden. The name Saxenburg developed from these early pioneers.

In 1989, the Bührer family purchases the Saxenburg wine farm. Coming from the wine business their aim was to make Saxenburg one of the most reputed South African wineries, both on a national and international platform.

In 2015 two siblings of the second Bührer generation took over the reigns of the Estate with the goal of maintaining the hard work done by their parents.

In 1991, the winemaker Nico van der Merwe joined Saxenburg and stayed their until 2017. Edwin Grace, Nico's assistant for 12 years, took over as Head Cellar Master from Nico van der Merwe in 2017.

At the beginning, Saxenburg became famous for the Cabernet Sauvignon; today also the Shiraz has become one of the best from the Cape. Their Saxenburg Shiraz Select vintages regularly receive 5 stars from John Platter's wine guide.
